The quest still requires him to be in the party, so you'd need to keep him -- at least for the duration of the quest 
And that review would be only of the quest part if you're not planning to keep him, while there is a whole lot of new spells, a friendship path, ToB mini-quest, items, epilogues etc. Perhaps leave him for when you want to see the whole mod rather than just 25-30% of it
