After leaving the Underdark I went to Eilistraee's Clearing and picked up the quest to recover the Bard's stolen book. Later I received the 2nd paladin stronghold quest (speak with the Baron), when I entered the Umar Hills' inn there was the Hooded Man (who was already hostile), after the brief conversation with the Hooded Man, the Baron and his group all turned hostile forcing me to kill them all.
The 2 surviving members of the stronghold quest (Brunson and Crolus) both are unaware that the Baron is dead and says I should go talk to him:
Brunson: "Go on, you'll be late for your little chat. I ain't got anything else to say."
Crolus: "The baron expects you. Turn your ears away from the jabbering of the squatters and seek his audience with all haste"
When I go back to the Radiant Heart to speak with Sir William, he also tells me to speak to the dead baron.
